Kasey primarily works with SELC’s Water Team to halt PFAS, or “forever chemicals,” and 1,4-dioxane pollution in North Carolina’s waterways. She helps conduct research, write public comments, and pursue litigation to enforce bedrock environmental laws against polluters – with particular focus on emerging contaminants. She also supports the SELC Land and Community Team in advocating for transportation planning and land use decisions to benefit our communities.  

“I’m proud to have worked on SELC’s comments and to have spoken at the public hearing regarding UNC Chapel Hill’s plans to burn waste pellets, containing PFAS and other harmful air toxins, at its cogeneration facility,” Kasey said. Shortly after SELC submitted comments, UNC pulled its plans to burn these pellets and is instead pursuing an alternative energy analysis. “Hopefully UNC will develop a roadmap to ending its reliance on coal,” said Kasey, who attended law school in Chapel Hill.   

Kasey’s undergraduate degree from University of Virginia was in chemical engineering, and she helped design and implement water treatment technology at industrial facilities before entering law school. “This work was rewarding in many ways, but I felt pulled to do more proactive work to prevent industrial water pollution,” she said. “I feel lucky to be at SELC doing my small part to make our world livable for future generations.”  

Originally from Monroe, Conn., Kasey’s first experience of the south’s natural beauty was in Charlottesville. “I fell in love with Virginia mountains and countryside,” she said. “Some of my favorite memories are taking winding drives through Crozet’s rolling hills, picking strawberries at Chiles Family Orchard, and hiking in the Shenandoah Mountains.”
