Hannah’s legal research and analysis supports access for Southerners to clean energy and solar projects in their communities.
“At SELC, I work with communities throughout eastern North Carolina experiencing high energy burdens, meaning their utility bills are high relative to their household incomes. We explore renewable energy projects that will foster community resilience and self-sufficiency. I get to work collaboratively with local leaders, community organizers, and technical experts to envision and implement weatherization, solar, and local grid investment projects.”
Hannah also advocates for the development of clean energy resources and carbon emission reductions before the North Carolina Utilities Commission. Hannah analyzes evolving federal laws and works closely with clients to advocate for them in federal litigation matters.
“Growing up in North Carolina, I have long admired the fierce advocacy of SELC’s attorneys and policy advocates,” Hannah said. “I am motivated to do this work every day because my colleagues and I share in the conviction that every person deserves to live in a healthy and clean environment. It is inspiring to see this conviction at work paired with our deep knowledge of the people and places in the South and issue-area expertise.”
In her hometown of Clayton, southeast of Raleigh, Hannah made “fond memories of exploring the pines and hardwoods of the Clemmons Educational State Forest just beyond my backyard. Here in Chapel Hill, I continue to appreciate the beauty and ecosystem services of the protected natural spaces in my own community. When I find retreat and recreation in these spaces, I am reminded of the importance of SELC’s work to protect them and make them more accessible for communities across the South.”
