Daniel Brookshire

Senior Energy Policy Analyst

When Congress passed the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA), the most ambitious climate legislation in our country’s history, Daniel immediately dove into the details of its many clean energy related provisions. He is passionate about helping SELC “ensure that utilities in our region maximize the historic potential of this legislation and leave no opportunities on the table,” he says.

Based in the SELC Chapel Hill office, Daniel works closely with energy attorneys on technical and policy aspects, and engaging and managing experts who testify. He reviews filings in utility regulatory proceedings and analyzes proposed regulations and legislation for environmental, economic, and equity implications.

Daniel also synthesizes quantitative information and recommendations into clear and compelling presentations and written reports. He supports energy advocacy by providing information and policy context for public comments, communications, and legal arguments. Daniel is an expert resource and voice for SELC advocacy in meetings, stakeholder processes, presentations, and lobbying.

“I work for SELC because I have been consistently impressed with how smart and effective the SELC team is, and I enjoy being part of a large but regionally focused nonprofit,” he says. “By focusing on the Southeast, SELC can maximize targeted clean energy advocacy in a region where the transition to clean energy has significant implications for the climate.”

Daniel is from Brevard, North Carolina, moved to Chapel Hill in 2010 for graduate school and never left.

“I love the Blue Ridge Mountains surrounding my hometown,” he says. “My family has been there for generations, and I loved growing up hiking, biking, and swimming in the ‘Land of Waterfalls,’ especially in DuPont State Forest and Pisgah National Forest.”
