Allmond joins Spanberger administration as first ever Chief Energy Officer in Virginia

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va.  —   Today Governor Abigail Spanberger appointed Josephus Allmond to join her administration as Chief Energy Officer. An Executive Order signed today created this new cabinet-level position to work to keep energy affordable, maintain reliability, and ensure Virginia meets long-term clean energy goals. Leadership in aligning Virginia’s energy policy and prioritizing solutions across multiple state agencies and programs will help the Commonwealth address pressing issues such as increasing demand for electricity, data center growth, energy affordability, and Virginia’s participation in the multi-state grid—all while meeting the Commonwealth’s clean energy goals.

Allmond has served as an attorney in SELC’s Virginia office since 2020.

In response to Allmond’s appointment, Virginia Office Director Sarah Francisco released the following statement:

“The Commonwealth could not have a better lawyer, energy expert, and person helping to guide us to cleaner, more fair and affordable energy now and in the future. Josephus has a deep knowledge of Virginia’s energy system through his wide-ranging energy policy work and a detailed understanding of the complex implementation process at the State Corporation Commission and other state agencies. He has represented public interest organizations and communities in various forums and has advocated for clean, affordable energy throughout the state. His expertise and commitment make him an asset to the Spanberger administration.”
