Kim Hayes

Office:

Charlottesville, VA – Virginia Office

Kim Hayes

Associate Attorney

Glynn D. Key Fellow

Kim reviews air permits and compliance records for industrial sources in Virginia, especially in Hopewell and the Hampton Roads regions. She engages state agencies on environmental justice matters related to the siting and permitting of air-polluting facilities. Based in Charlottesville, Kim also collaborates with local organizations and residents to address problems they encounter when participating in permit proceedings and challenging permits.

“I’m excited to protect vulnerable and underserved communities against attempts to dismantle decades of work towards environmental justice,” Kim said. “I joined SELC because place-based work is often community-led and focuses on issues at the local and state level. These aspects of SELC’s work are important to me because it really gets at the heart of the environmental justice movement.”

In law school in the nation’s capital, Kim clerked for the United States Department of Justice Environment and Natural Resources Division, White House Council on Environmental Quality, the Natural Resource Defense Council, and the Air Quality Division of the D.C. Department of Energy and Environment.

Originally from Oklahoma City, Kim says that one place she loves in the SELC region is Birmingham “because the city played a significant role in shaping the civil rights movement.”
