Tyler Demetriou

Office:

Charlottesville, VA – Virginia Office

Tyler Demetriou

Associate Attorney

On the Virginia Energy Team, Tyler has focused on returning Virginia to the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative and assisting with cases before the State Corporation Commission on utility regulation. The goal is to ensure all Virginians have clean, affordable power.

Tyler is also involved in challenging the Mountain Valley Pipeline’s Southgate extension. Tyler’s day-to-day work includes legal research, helping develop case strategies, writing briefs and other litigation materials.

Before he became a lawyer, Tyler worked in SELC’s Charlottesville office as a law school clinic student and then as an intern. He also served as a law clerk in the Court of Appeals of Virginia prior to his current stint at SELC.

Tyler is from Virginia Beach, where a special place beckons: Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge and False Cape State Park. He interned for a summer in high school at False Cape, which is only accessible by driving through the refuge or boating.

“As a lifelong Virginian, I am committed to advocating for the people, wildlife, and environment of Virginia and the South. There is no better place to do that work than SELC.”

He recalls spending days monitoring the beach for sea turtle nests, logging invasive species, and wandering the pristine coastal habitat.

“That experience was a big part of what inspired me to pursue a career in environmental work,” Tyler said. “My decision came full circle when, as a summer intern at SELC, I worked on filing public comments in support of protecting the refuge. Now, any time I’m back in Virginia Beach, I try to make it to the refuge. It’s got the best birdwatching in the state, and I’ve seen bobcats, coyotes, and tons of other wildlife out there too.”
